What Happens During a Colonic
A Gradual Fill-and-Release Process Guided by Your Comfort
Colon hydrotherapy, also called a colonic or colonic irrigation, uses warm, filtered water to hydrate and soften stool inside the colon.
People sometimes use the broader terms colon cleanse or colon cleansing when searching for this type of service. Iowa Colonics specifically provides private, practitioner-guided, closed-system colon hydrotherapy in Fairfield, Iowa.
Throughout the session, Joanna guides you through a series of fills and releases. She operates the equipment and manages the process while you stay in communication with her about what you are feeling.
Warm Water Enters Gradually
Joanna slowly introduces warm, filtered water through the closed system.
As the water enters, you may feel fullness, pressure, or the urge to have a bowel movement. You tell Joanna what you are feeling so she can adjust the water flow and pace around your comfort.
Time to Hydrate and Soften
Each fill gives the water time to hydrate and soften stool before Joanna begins the release.
The process is not rushed. You are never expected to tolerate more water, pressure, or discomfort than feels manageable to you.
Water and Bowel Contents Leave Through the Closed System
During each release, the water and bowel contents leave through the contained drainage line.
Everything released remains inside the closed system, helping keep the process clean, enclosed, and private.
You Stay in Control
Joanna personally manages every fill and release. Your role is simply to tell her what you are feeling.
At any time, you can ask Joanna to slow the water, pause the fill, begin a release, or stop the session completely. You never have to stay silent about what you feel or push through pain.
One Practitioner. Complete Attention.
Every Colonic Is Personally Guided by Joanna
Joanna Ayala is the owner and Certified Colon Hydrotherapist at Iowa Colonics. She is the only practitioner, and she personally performs every colonic.
There are no rotating practitioners, unexpected handoffs, or questions about who will be with you during something this personal. The person you learn about before your appointment is the same person who welcomes you, listens to what has been happening, and stays with you throughout the session.
Care That Responds to You
Joanna understands that every client and every colonic can feel different. She listens closely to what you tell her, pays attention to how you are responding, and adjusts the flow and pace around your comfort.
She explains what is happening when you need reassurance, gives you time to communicate, and never expects you to feel embarrassed, rushed, or silent about what your body is experiencing.
“When it came time for my colonic, Joanna never rushed me through it. She let me guide the way based on my own tolerance. I didn’t feel like I was just another number to them.” Excerpt from a 5-star client review

Your Only Job Is to Communicate
Joanna manages the equipment, the water, and the pace of the session. You never have to operate anything, decide what should happen next, or stay quiet when something does not feel right.
Tell her when you feel comfortable, when you feel pressure, when you want more time, or when you want her to slow down, pause, or stop.
Your First Visit
Know What Will Happen Before You Arrive
A first colonic can feel intimidating when you do not know what the office looks like, how much privacy you will have, or what will happen once you enter the treatment room.

What First-Time Clients Say

“This was my first time receiving a colonic, and I’ll admit, I was nervous going in. But from start to finish, everything went so smoothly.”Excerpt from a 5-star client review
These excerpts describe individual first-visit experiences. Every client and every colonic can feel different.
Meet One-on-One
Joanna welcomes you and talks with you privately before anything begins.
You can explain what brought you in, share what you have been experiencing, and tell her about anything that makes you feel nervous, uncertain, or embarrassed.
You do not need to know which questions to ask. Joanna explains what you need to know and gives you time to talk without judgment or pressure.
Change and Prepare Privately
Joanna shows you to the private changing room and connected bathroom.
You can use the bathroom, keep your top on, and change into a gown in complete privacy. Your belongings remain in the changing area while you enter the separate treatment room.
Joanna will ask you to urinate before the colonic begins. This helps prevent you from needing the speculum removed and reinserted because you need to urinate during the session.
You never have to move through a public area undressed or exposed.
See the Equipment and Ask Questions
Before the colonic begins, Joanna shows you the equipment and explains how the session will unfold.
She also shows you the new, single-use client kit prepared for your colonic and explains the purpose of the speculum used during the session.
Nothing should feel hidden or left for you to discover after the process has already started. This is your opportunity to ask about anything that still feels unfamiliar.
Begin Only When You Are Ready
After Joanna has explained the process and answered your questions, you have time to settle onto the treatment table.
When you tell her you are ready, Joanna explains what she is doing and gently inserts the single-use speculum before beginning the water flow.
The colonic does not begin merely because you entered the room or reached a certain point in the appointment. You can ask another question, request more time, or decide not to continue before the session begins.
Remain Covered and in Communication
Your top stays on, and your gown keeps you covered throughout the colonic except for the limited access Joanna needs while inserting and removing the speculum.
Only you and Joanna are in the treatment room. She stays beside you, operates the equipment, and guides the session while you tell her what you are feeling.
You can ask her to slow the water, pause, begin a release, or stop the session at any time. You never have to remain silent or tolerate something that feels too strong.
Take Your Time Afterward
When the colonic is complete, Joanna removes the speculum and gives you complete privacy.
You return to the private changing room and connected bathroom, where you can use the toilet, clean up, and get dressed.
You have time to take care of what you need before leaving. You are not rushed out of the office the moment the colonic ends.
Why One Colonic and a Series Are Different
More Colonics Get More Poop and Trapped Gas Out
You are tired of feeling backed up, bloated, heavy, full of pressure, and like more poop still needs to come out. You want your stomach to feel flatter and your body to feel lighter, cleaner, more emptied out, and more comfortable.
Choose 1 Colonic when you want to meet Joanna, experience one complete colonic, see what comes out, and decide from your own experience whether you want more.
The first colonic gets out recent poop and trapped gas while the warm water begins softening harder, drier poop that remains.
The first colonic starts softening it. The colonics after it get it out.
More colonics get more out. More poop comes out. Trapped gas releases. The releases can become longer, fuller, darker, and less formed as additional colonics release more of the stool softened during the earlier sessions.
Feeling better after 1, 3, or even 6 colonics does not mean your colon is empty. It means enough poop and trapped gas came out to relieve some of the pressure, bloating, heaviness, and unfinished feeling. More hard, dry poop can still remain.
As more comes out, clients commonly describe less pressure, less bloating, a flatter stomach, feeling lighter and more emptied out, and spending less time thinking about when they will finally be able to poop.
If you want to experience one colonic before deciding, begin with 1. If you want more poop and trapped gas out, choose the package that fits how far you are ready to go.
View current availability before purchasing. Select 1 Colonic to see available dates and times. If you want a package instead, go back and choose 3, 6, 9, or 12 Colonics.
The Four Phases, in Brief
What Comes Out Changes Until the Process Shifts to Hydration
Recent stool and trapped gas usually move first.
Across additional colonics, Joanna observes the releases changing in the clear viewing tube. They can become darker, less formed, larger, longer, fuller, thicker, and physically different before the process shifts from deeper clearing toward hydration.
Iowa Colonics describes this progression through the Four Phases.
More colonics get more out. The Four Phases explain why the early releases and later releases look physically different, and why the final phase shifts from clearing to hydration.
Explore the Four Phases
Phase ONE
Initial Release
Recent formed stool, trapped gas, and what your body releases first begin moving through the viewing tube.
At the same time, the water begins soaking into stool that remains hard, dry, and difficult to pass.
- Trapped gas releasing
- Less pressure
- Less fullness
- A lighter feeling after the colonic
Phase One clears what moves first while beginning to soften what can come out later.
Phase TWO
Deeper Clearing
Later colonics return to material the earlier sessions began hydrating and softening.
More stool comes out.
- Darker
- Less formed
- Larger
- Longer
- Fuller
- Greater in volume
Clients commonly describe less pressure, less bloating, a flatter stomach, and a stronger feeling of being emptied out.
Phase THREE
The Breakthrough
As the series continues, Joanna observes material that looks physically different from the recognizable stool released earlier.
It can appear:
- Very dark
- Thicker
- Adhesive-looking
- Flake-like
- Coating-like
- Rope-like
This material can move slowly through the viewing tube across several fill-and-release cycles. Clients who reach this stage commonly describe feeling cleaner at their core, freer, lighter, and less weighed down than they felt earlier in the series.
Phase FOUR
Restoration and Hydration
After the clearing work of Phases One through Three, the process changes.
There is less retained material left to release, and the darker, thicker material seen during Phase Three is no longer appearing.
The water begins moving through the colon more freely.
Fill cycles become longer. Release cycles become shorter.
The viewing tube shows mostly clear water, with only small traces of recent stool or occasional recent material.
This is the hydration phase.
Additional colonics confirm that the deeper clearing has ended and support hydration after the extended clearing process.
- Restored
- Settled
- Comfortable
- Lighter
- Clearer
- More like themselves
Phase Four is not about getting a large amount out. It is about confirming that the deeper material is no longer releasing and completing the process through hydration.
Every Client Progresses Differently
The Four Phases reflect patterns Joanna has observed across many Iowa Colonics sessions. Progression varies by person, phases can overlap or appear in a different order, and no number of colonics guarantees a particular phase, release, timing, or result.

$115 per colonic
Save $90

Clients commonly describe less pressure, less bloating, a flatter stomach, a lighter and emptier feeling, and less time thinking about when they will finally be able to poop.

Across nine sessions, the series can move farther into deeper clearing. What moves through the viewing tube can become very dark, thicker, adhesive-looking, flake-like, coating-like, or rope-like.
Nine is for someone who wants more of that deeper material out and wants to feel cleaner at the core, flatter through the stomach, lighter, and less weighed down.
12 Colonics
I Want the Longest Series for Getting More Out and Breaking the Cycle of Feeling Backed Up
$105 per colonic
Save $300
Choose 12 Colonics when you want the longest available series for getting more older retained stool out and moving farther through the Four Phases.
With twelve sessions already purchased, you can continue scheduling while your body is releasing instead of waiting until pressure, bloating, and the unfinished feeling build again.
As the series continues, more comes out, including darker, thicker, and physically different material that can take several sessions to release.
Clients commonly describe feeling lighter, flatter through the stomach, cleaner at their core, and less preoccupied with needing to poop.
Twelve is the deepest package Iowa Colonics offers and gives you the lowest price per colonic and the greatest total savings. It does not guarantee completion of the Four Phases.
Begin With the Package That Feels Right Now
You do not need to decide on every future colonic today. When your package is complete, you can decide what comes next based on what came out, how the releases changed, and how far you want to continue. Additional packages can be purchased when you are ready.

Honest Answers Before Your First Colonic
Questions You May Be Hesitant to Ask
Some questions are difficult to say aloud when they involve constipation, poop, undressing, odor, or the fear that your body might do something embarrassing.
You may worry that your question sounds strange or that you are the only person thinking it. You are not.
These are concerns many clients quietly carry before their first colonic. You deserve clear, honest answers before deciding whether you feel ready.
What Is the Difference Between Colon Hydrotherapy, a Colonic, Colonic Irrigation, and a Colon Cleanse?
Colon hydrotherapy is the professional service Iowa Colonics provides. It uses warm, filtered water through a closed system while Joanna personally guides the fills and releases.
A colonic is a common shorter name for colon hydrotherapy. Colonic irrigation is another term used for the same type of service.
Colon cleanse and colon cleansing are broader terms people may use when searching. Those terms can also refer to supplements, laxatives, enemas, diet programs, or colonoscopy preparation, so they do not always mean colon hydrotherapy.
Iowa Colonics specifically provides private, practitioner-guided, closed-system colon hydrotherapy in Fairfield, Iowa. Iowa Colonics does not sell an at-home colon-cleansing supplement or kit.
What If I Feel Nervous or Embarrassed?
Feeling nervous before your first colonic is completely understandable.
You may be wondering: What will happen? What will the colonic feel like? Will I be exposed? Will something embarrassing happen? Will I remain in control once the session begins?
It is also understandable to feel embarrassed about discussing constipation, bowel movements, undressing, or what your body releases.
To Joanna, none of this is awkward, shocking, or shameful. This is her work, and you will be treated with patience, care, and no judgment.
You do not need to arrive calm.
You do not need to hide your embarrassment, apologize for your body, or pretend to feel more comfortable than you do.
You can arrive exactly as you are. Joanna will guide you through the experience one step at a time.
Will I Be Exposed or Left Alone?
No.
You change in a private changing room, keep your top on, and wear a gown during the colonic.
The gown keeps you covered except for the limited access Joanna needs while inserting and removing the speculum.
Only you and Joanna are in the treatment room.
Joanna stays beside you, operates the equipment, and personally guides the colonic from beginning to end.
You are never left alone with the machine or expected to figure out what happens next.
Is Everything Clean, and Is the Client Kit Used on Anyone Else?
Joanna uses a new, unopened, single-use client kit for every colonic.
The supplies in that kit are used only for your session and discarded afterward.
Reusable equipment and treatment-room surfaces are cleaned and disinfected between clients according to Iowa Colonics’ established sanitation procedures.
Nothing from another client’s single-use kit is reused for your colonic.
Will It Smell or Make a Mess?
The closed system keeps everything your body releases contained.
Water, gas, stool, and other released material leave through enclosed tubing.
You do not touch what comes out.
Nothing releases onto you.
You do not need to get up or rush to the bathroom when your body begins letting go.
Because everything passes through the enclosed system, odor from the release remains contained inside the tubing.
What Will a Colonic Feel Like, and What If I Become Uncomfortable?
As water enters gradually, you may feel: Fullness, pressure, warmth, movement, bubbling, gas shifting, the urge to have a bowel movement, brief cramping as your body prepares to release, and relief after the water and released material flow out.
These sensations can come in waves.
One fill may feel quiet. Another may bring stronger pressure, more movement, or a noticeable urge to let go.
When your body releases, the pressure often eases before the next gradual fill begins.
The purpose is not to see how much discomfort you can tolerate.
Joanna remains in communication with you throughout the colonic.
If something feels uncomfortable or too strong, tell her immediately.
She can slow the water, reduce the flow, pause the fill, give your body more time, begin a release, or stop the session completely.
You never have to remain silent, push through pain, or tolerate a sensation that does not feel right.
Your body does not have to perform on demand.
Your only job is to tell Joanna what you are feeling.
